Who can use this feature?
- All users
- Team mind maps are available on all plans.
- Private mind maps are currently still available on all plans (until Feb 11).
Changes to the Basic plan:
- What will change: Creating private mind maps is no longer available on the Basic plan. Team mind maps are the new default.
- When will it change: MindMeister's free Basic plan changes on Feb 11, 2025. If your account was created before February 11, the updates will take effect on February 24, 2025.
There are two types of mind maps in MindMeister: Private Mind Maps and Team Mind Maps.
- Private mind maps are invite-only. Only users who have received an invitation can view a private mind map.
- Team mind maps are immediately visible to your entire team. Your teammates will not need an invitation to access your mind map.
What is a Private Mind Map?
Private mind maps are invite-only.
All Private mind maps are stored on the Dashboard under My maps. This category contains mind maps you created and private mind maps that have been shared with you. It does not contain any team mind maps that you have access to.
Private mind maps are marked with a symbol next to the name.
Only users who have been expressly invited to a mind map can view and access it. To check whether a mind map is private or not, open the Share dialog. Here you can check who has access.
What is a Team Mind Map?
Team mind maps are immediately visible to every user within your team. They are a new way to share mind maps with your team.
To access all Team mind maps, click on the category Team maps in the left sidebar.
You can move existing mind maps into the category Team maps when they're ready to share for review, collaboration or knowledge sharing. When a mind map is moved to Team Maps:
- All team members who didn’t previously have access will now receive editing access.
- Existing access levels for team members who already have access will stay the same. For example, team members with view-only access will keep view-only access.
- External collaborators outside the owning team are unaffected, and their access rights will not change.
After moving the mind map to the Team maps category, you can use the Share window to adjust a team member's access level, changing it from "Contributer" to "Viewer" or from "Viewer" to "Contributer." Note, however, that removing a team member’s access from the Share window will not remove their access to a team mind map. They will still be able to access it as part of the team.
Although it is possible to invite team members to a team mind map via the sharing window, this is not necessary if the mind map is in the Team Maps category, unless you want to change the access permissions manually.
Team mind maps are marked with a symbol next to the name.
Convert a Private Mind Map to a Team Mind Map (or vice versa)

- Open the Dashboard (My Maps).
- Click on the three dots (...) next to the mind map.
- Click on Move to Team maps.
- Click Move.
Follow these steps to make a Team mind map private again:
- Open the Dashboard.
- Click on the category Team maps in the left sidebar.
- Click on the three dots (...) next to the mind map.
- Click Move to My maps. (People invited by email via the Share window retain their access rights.
- Click Move.
Only Content Managers can move mind maps from Team maps to My maps and vice versa.
Can team admins set default mind map types for their team?
Team admins cannot choose whether their team creates team mind maps or private mind maps by default.
Are Team Maps Available on iOS and Android App?
No, Team mind maps are only available on the web browser for now. This feature is coming soon to the Android and iOS app.
Why Can a Team Member Still See a Mind Map After I Removed Their Access?
If your mind map is saved in the Team maps category, all team members will retain access, even if you adjust individual sharing settings. This is because every mind map in the Team maps category is automatically shared with the entire team.
To remove a team member’s access, you can move the mind map from Team maps to My maps.
Alternatively, if you have already moved the mind map to My maps, open the Share settings to further customize access levels as needed.
Can I Create Folders in the Team Maps Category?
Currently, creating folders in the Team maps category is not possible.
Why Can My Team Member Only View the Team Mindmap and Not Edit It?
If your team member can only view the Team mindmap, it’s likely that you shared the mind map with them via email and set the access level to “Viewer.” To allow editing, click on Share and update the access level to grant editing permissions.
Do Team Mind Maps Count Toward the Basic Plan's 3 Mind Map Limit?
Please note the changes to the Basic plan made on 11 February and 24 February, 2025. The information below is only valid until then.
Yes, team mind maps count toward the 3 mind map limit on the Basic plan. Each user on the Basic plan can access up to 3 mind maps in total. This includes:
- Mind maps you create: Any mind maps that you personally create and where you are designated as the mind map's Content Manager.
- Team mind maps: Mind maps created within your team, that are placed in the category Team maps.
- Shared mind maps: Any mind maps that have been shared with you, whether by members of your team or external users outside your team.
This limit applies to each individual user. It is not a team-wide limit but rather specific to each user’s account.
