How to Use Map Layouts

Types of Map Layout

There are three main types of map layout in MindMeister: mind map, list and org chart.

Mind Map. First-level topics are organized around the central topic in a radial structure. Second-level topics branch from the first-level topics in the same way.

List. Topics are aligned in a single, vertical list. Second-level topics are placed underneath their parent topics, slightly indented to show hierarchy levels.

Org Chart. First-level topics are aligned horizontally underneath the central topic. Second-level and lower-level topics are aligned vertically beneath these using the list structure.

Changing layout from the central topic will change the layout of all child topics (in many cases, this is your whole mind map). However, disconnected topics (or topics for which manual layout is selected — see below) will not be affected by the new style.

Auto/Manual Layout

To switch between auto and manual layout for a topic:

  1. Select the topic you wish to change the layout for.

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) from the context menu bar.

  3. Click Auto/Manual layout from the context menu.

You can also drag and drop an auto-positioned topic to a new location on the map. This automatically changes the topic to “manual layout”.

Select Multiple Map Layouts in a Single Map

MindMeister allows you to include multiple types of layout in a single map, for example, if you need to include a list inside a mind map. The layout can be changed for all manually positioned topics (this will automatically affect all child topics). To manually position a topic:

  1. Select the topic you wish to change the layout for.

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) from the context menu bar.

  3. Click Manual layout from the context menu.

You can also drag and drop an auto-positioned topic to a new location on the map. This automatically changes the topic to “manual layout”.

To change the layout of a manually positioned topic:

  1. Select the topic you wish to change the layout for.
