Every mind map in MindMeister has an owner. The owner always keeps access to the mind map, regardless of the map limit of their plan.
Team mind maps were removed on October 14, 2026
Since October 14, 2026, all mind maps are private and shared only with the people who have access to them. The Team maps category no longer exists, so ownership no longer depends on where a mind map is stored. To learn more, see Changes to team maps and map limits.
Glossary
- Owner: The owner of a mind map. The owner always keeps access to the mind map and can share it with other users.
- Content Manager: The individual who created or duplicated the mind map, responsible for managing settings and permissions.
Why is Mind Map Ownership so Important?
Mind map ownership determines who always retains access to a mind map. This matters in two situations:
- Map limits: On plans with a map limit, the owner keeps access to the mind maps they own, even if they have reached the limit.
- Leaving a team: When a user leaves a team, ownership of their private mind maps is retained.
What is Mind Map Ownership?
Every mind map in MindMeister has an owner.
All mind maps are private. The owner decides who else can access a mind map by sharing it. Other users only have access if the mind map has been shared with them.
- Example 1: You own a mind map and share it with a colleague. Your colleague can access the mind map, but you remain its owner. If your colleague's access is removed, you still keep access.
- Example 2: You are on the Basic plan and have access to more mind maps than your map limit allows. You still keep access to the mind maps you own, regardless of the limit.
What happens to former team mind maps?
Team mind maps that existed before October 14, 2026 have become private mind maps:
- Everyone who opened a team mind map before the change keeps individual access to it. The mind map appears in their map list.
- Anyone who never opened the team mind map loses access to it.
- No mind maps have been deleted. The owner can share a mind map directly with anyone who needs access again.

To view the ownership of a mind map, open the Share dialog.
Can a Mind Map Have More Than One Content Manager?
No, each mind map can only have one Content Manager.

No, each mind map can only have one owner.
What Happens to My Mind Maps When I Leave My Team?
When you leave a team, ownership of your private mind maps is retained. As the owner, you keep access to the mind maps you own.
Can I Leave My Team with Any of My Mind Maps?
Yes. Because ownership of private mind maps is retained when you leave a team, you keep access to the mind maps you own.
Mind maps that are owned by other users and were only shared with you are not affected by ownership. Your access to them depends on how they are shared with you.
