Connect MindMeister to Claude via the MindMeister MCP server

The MindMeister MCP server is currently in public beta.

The MindMeister app is recommended for most users

If you want to use MindMeister in Claude, we recommend installing the MindMeister app for Claude. It is available directly from Claude's app directory and does not require a connector URL or client ID.

Use the MindMeister MCP server if you work with Claude Code, an IDE, or another compatible AI client that the app does not cover. You can also continue using the MCP server if you have already configured it as a custom connector.

The MindMeister MCP server allows you to connect MindMeister to compatible AI assistants and clients. Once connected, your AI assistant can securely interact with your mind maps to help you brainstorm, organize ideas, summarize content, and automate repetitive work.

This article explains how to connect the MindMeister MCP server, what you can do with it, and how authentication and data access work.

Important

AI can make mistakes. Double-check any changes to your mind maps before relying on them.

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard that allows AI assistants to securely connect to external tools and services.

The MindMeister MCP server enables compatible AI clients to interact with your MindMeister workspace using natural language.

Once connected, the AI client can access the mind maps that your Meister account already has permission to view or edit.

What can you do with the MindMeister MCP server?

Once connected, your AI assistant can help you work with your mind maps using natural language.

Common use cases include:

  • Create an entire mind map from a short brief, meeting agenda, or brainstorming prompt.
  • Expand existing branches with additional ideas, examples, or supporting information.
  • Restructure and reorganize complex mind maps using natural-language instructions.
  • Summarize large mind maps into concise overviews or meeting summaries.
  • Extract action items and next steps from brainstorming maps.
  • Generate workshop outlines, project plans, or concept structures from prompts.
  • Search across mind maps to quickly find information, ideas, or project context.

Connect MindMeister to Claude.ai with a custom connector

Looking for the easiest way to connect?

For everyday use in Claude, install the MindMeister app for Claude instead. The steps below are only required if you specifically want to set up the MCP server as a custom connector.

To add the MindMeister MCP server to Claude.ai as a custom connector:

  1. Open Claude.
  2. Go to Customize > Connectors.
  3. Click the + button next to Connectors.
  4. Select Add custom connector.
  5. Enter a name for the connector and paste the MindMeister MCP server URL: https://mcp.mindmeister.com/mcp
  6. Open Advanced settings and paste the client ID: I2c15pEw18co_aBF1o1PosvKWlRKAySMW0pQsIWey2c
  7. Click Add or Connect.
  8. Sign in to your Meister account when prompted.

The client ID is a public OAuth identifier and is not a secret.

Once authentication is complete, Claude can begin interacting with your MindMeister workspace.

Using Claude Team or Enterprise?

An Owner or Primary Owner must add the custom connector to the organization before individual members can connect it. Organization owners can do this under Organization settings > Connectors.

Owners may also restrict which connector tools and actions are available. If the connector is unavailable or a particular action does not work, contact your Claude administrator.

Connect MindMeister to Claude Code

You can connect the MindMeister MCP server to Claude Code through the command line.

Run the following command in your terminal:

claude mcp add-json meister '{"type":"http","url":"https://mcp.mindmeister.com/mcp","oauth":{"clientId":"I2c15pEw18co_aBF1o1PosvKWlRKAySMW0pQsIWey2c","callbackPort":18920}}' --scope user

Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and authenticate with your Meister account when prompted.

The client ID shown in the command is a public OAuth identifier and is not a secret.

What data can an AI client access?

The AI client can only access the MindMeister content that your authenticated account already has permission to view or edit.

Depending on your permissions, it may be able to:

  • Read mind maps and map branches.
  • Create and edit mind maps.
  • Add, move, and restructure topics.
  • Generate summaries and brainstorming content.
  • Search workspace content.
Important

An AI client cannot access content that your Meister account itself does not have permission to access.

How authentication works

The MindMeister MCP server uses secure OAuth authentication.

When you connect an AI client:

  • You authenticate directly with your Meister account.
  • The AI client receives secure access permissions.
  • You can revoke or reconnect access at any time by disconnecting the connector and authenticating again.

Disconnect or reconnect the MindMeister MCP server

The exact steps depend on the AI client you use. In Claude:

  1. Open your connector or MCP settings.
  2. Locate the MindMeister connector.
  3. Remove or disconnect the connector.

To reconnect, repeat the setup steps and authenticate again.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the MindMeister app or the MCP server?

For most users working in Claude, we recommend the MindMeister app for Claude. It can be installed directly from Claude's app directory without manually entering connection details.

Use the MCP server for Claude Code, IDEs, and other compatible AI clients that the app does not cover. You can also continue using it if you have already configured a custom connector.

Which AI clients are supported?

The MindMeister MCP server can be used with:

  • Claude.ai as a custom connector. For most Claude.ai users, we recommend the MindMeister app instead.
  • Claude Code.
  • Compatible IDEs and other clients that support remote MCP servers and OAuth.

What languages does the MindMeister MCP server support?

The MindMeister MCP server is language-agnostic. It works in any language supported by your AI client.

Can I connect multiple Meister accounts at the same time?

No. Only one Meister account can be connected at a time.

If needed, disconnect the MCP server and reconnect using a different account.

When should I use the MCP server instead of Meister AI?

Use the MindMeister MCP server when you want to work with your mind maps from a compatible external AI client.

Use Meister AI when you want to use AI features directly inside MindMeister.

Meister AI features work directly inside your mind maps, while the MindMeister MCP server allows an external AI client to work across your MindMeister workspace.

Does the MindMeister MCP server use my Meister AI prompts?

No. The MindMeister MCP server does not use the monthly prompt allowance included with Meister AI features.

Usage limits, billing, and model access are managed by the AI client you use.

Where is data processed?

Requests are securely transmitted between your AI client, the MindMeister MCP server, and Meister services to complete the action you requested.

Only the data required to complete your request is processed.

Can I self-host the MindMeister MCP server?

Self-hosting is currently not available.

If your organization requires self-hosting, please contact the Meister Support team.

Can an admin control access to the MindMeister MCP server?

Claude Team and Enterprise Owners can control which connectors and tools are available to their organization. An Owner or Primary Owner must add a custom connector to the organization before individual members can authenticate.

Other AI clients may provide their own administration and connector controls.

Can I connect MindMeister to other AI tools?

You may be able to connect MindMeister to other AI clients that support remote MCP servers and OAuth. Setup and compatibility depend on the client.

If you need help connecting another AI tool, please contact the Meister Support team.

Does the AI assistant automatically change my mind maps?

No. The assistant only performs actions when instructed through prompts and within the permissions granted to your account.
