Legacy Mind Maps are No Longer Supported

These changes apply to MindMeister users on all plans.

Starting fall 2024, all mind maps will automatically open in the latest editor.

What Is Changing?
MindMeister will no longer support creating, editing, or viewing legacy mind maps. All mind maps created in the old MindMeister editor will automatically load in the latest editor. The old legacy editor will be removed, and all legacy mind maps will be transferred to the latest version of the editor. This change only affects users who still use the legacy editor.

From October through November 2024, all mind maps will be transitioned automatically. You and your team do not need to take any action. We’ll let your account admin know at least 30 days in advance of the change.

What Is the Old Editor? What Is the Latest Editor?

MindMeister introduced a new, updated version of the editor in November 2021. We refer to mind maps created in the old editor as “legacy” mind maps.

Opening a legacy mind map in the new editor permanently converts it to the latest editor.

Why is the Legacy Editor no longer available?

Removing support for legacy mind maps helps the MindMeister team move faster and deliver greater value to MindMeister customers — 99% of MindMeister’s customers already use the latest editor to map their ideas.

Are There Any Differences Between the New Editor and the Legacy Editor?

In the latest version of the Editor, we’ve streamlined the user experience and improved performance. As a result, some legacy functionality is no longer available, or works a little differently:

  • Custom Themes: Instead of applying a custom theme to your mind map, you can create a custom color palette and save color codes for easy access.
  • Legacy Themes and Templates: The latest editor has a bunch of new themes and templates to make sure your mind maps look great every time.
  • Custom Background Color: It’s no longer possible to set custom background colors in your mind map. Instead, you can choose a pre-made theme with a background color in the latest editor.
  • Web Search for Images/Videos: The integrated web search for images and videos isn’t included in the latest editor.
  • Presentation Mode: In the latest editor, you can present your ideas directly from the editor with one click. This replaces the legacy presentation mode which focused on customizability.
  • Default Mind Map Alignment Option: We removed the ability to set a default alignment option for the whole mind map

These changes are part of ongoing efforts to optimize the Editor's functionality and focus on core features.

How Can I Switch Back to the Old Legacy Editor?

The old legacy editor will no longer be available in MindMeister. All mind maps will open automatically in the latest editor. It is not possible to revert to the previous editor.

How Can I Create Slides in the New Presentation Mode?

It is not possible to create or customize slides.

You can enable Presentation Mode to quickly turn your mind maps into presentations. Presentations start with the topics on the right side of your map (highest to lowest), and the left side follows. It is not possible to customize the slides.

How Can I Arrange Topics Alphabetically?

It is not possible to sort topics alphabetically within a mind map in the latest editor.

How Can I Change the Default Alignment for the Mind Map?

You can't change the default alignment of the mind map, but you have several options for different layouts at your fingertips. You can choose from a mind map view, a list view, or an organizational chart layout.

What Should I Do if My Mind Map Has Performance Issues?

The maximum number of topics that can be stored in a mind map is technically 10,000. If you exceed 10,000 topics, you will lose access to your mind map.

However, the number of topics affects the mind map's performance. For a smooth experience, it's best to keep the number of topics under 2,000 topics. Additionally, consider breaking large mind maps into smaller, more manageable ones to keep your mind maps running smoothly.
