What is changing, and when
On October 14, 2026, team mind maps are removed from MindMeister. Every mind map becomes a private mind map that stays shared with the people who have opened it.
On the free Basic plan, the limit changes from 3 mind maps per team to 3 mind maps per person, and mind maps shared with you now count towards that limit.
No mind maps are deleted.
MindMeister currently has two types of mind map: private mind maps, and team mind maps that everyone in a team can see without an invitation. From October 14, 2026, there is only one type. Every mind map is private, and you decide who can open it by sharing it.
This page explains what happens to your existing mind maps, how the Basic plan limit works afterwards, and what to do if a mind map appears grayed out.
What changes in MindMeister?
- The Team maps area disappears from the sidebar and the navigation.
- All of your mind maps appear in one list instead of being split between My maps and Team maps.
- Mind maps become invite-only. Team members no longer get automatic access to a mind map simply because they are in your team.
- You can still share any mind map directly with the people who need it, through the Share dialog.
What happens to your existing team mind maps?
Your existing team mind maps become private mind maps. Access is worked out per person:
- If you have opened a team mind map at any point, you keep access to it. It stays in your map list after October 14.
- If you have never opened it, you lose access to it after October 14, and it no longer appears in your map list.
- The owner of a mind map always keeps access to it, whether or not anyone else opened it.
Open the team mind maps you still need before October 14
Opening a team mind map once, before the change, is enough to keep it in your map list afterwards. If you miss one, the owner can still share it with you directly at any time.
Nothing is deleted. A mind map you lose access to still exists, and the owner and everyone else who opened it can continue to work on it.
How many mind maps can you have on the Basic plan?
On the free Basic plan, you can access 3 mind maps per person. Two things change here:
- The limit used to apply per team. It now applies per person.
- Mind maps that other people share with you now count towards your 3, alongside the mind maps you created yourself.
This is how the Basic plan worked before team mind maps were introduced in 2024, so it is a return to the earlier behavior rather than a new restriction.
Paid plans are not affected by this limit. On a paid plan you can have as many mind maps as you like.
Which 3 mind maps stay available?
On the Basic plan, you keep access to your 3 oldest mind maps, measured by the date each one was created.
This is the opposite of the current behavior
Until October 14, the Basic plan keeps your 3 most recently created mind maps available. From October 14, it keeps your 3 oldest ones instead. If your newest mind maps are the ones you rely on, open them before the change and move the content you need into a mind map you are keeping.
What is a grayed-out mind map?
If you have access to more than 3 mind maps on the Basic plan, the extra ones are shown grayed out in your map list. A grayed-out mind map cannot be opened or edited, but it is still there and it is not deleted.
How do you regain access to a grayed-out mind map?
Free up one of your 3 places, and the next oldest grayed-out mind map becomes available again. You have three options:
- Leave a mind map you no longer need access to. This removes it from your map list without affecting anyone else. See Leave a map you no longer need access to.
- Delete a mind map you own. See Delete and restore mind maps.
- Upgrade to a paid plan to remove the limit entirely and regain access to all of your mind maps at once. See our pricing page.
What changes if you are on a paid plan?
The map limit does not apply to you, and the number of mind maps you can have does not change. Two things are still worth knowing:
- Your team mind maps convert as well. Teammates who never opened a particular mind map lose access to it on October 14, even on a paid plan. Share it with them directly to restore their access.
- People you collaborate with on the Basic plan are affected. Mind maps you share with them count towards their 3, so a mind map you shared recently may end up grayed out for them. If you work with someone regularly, consider adding them to your team.
Where do you find your mind maps now?
All of your mind maps appear in one list, with no separate Team maps category. On Home, you now see a maximum of 10 mind maps, with a link through to All maps for the complete list.
