These changes apply to users on the free Basic plan.
MindMeister's free Basic plan changes on Feb 11, 2025. These changes affect the 3 mind map limit, private mind maps, and access to mind maps for users on this plan. If your account was created before Feb 11, the updates will take effect on February 24, 2025.
This article explains the key updates and what actions you may need to take to adapt to the changes.
Key Changes to the Basic Plan
- The mind map limit is changing from 3 mind maps per user to 3 mind maps per team on the Basic plan.
- Creating private mind maps is no longer available on the Basic plan. Team mind maps are the new default.
- Mind maps shared with you by users outside your team do not count towards the 3 mind map limit.
- Only the 3 most recently created team mind maps are accessible.
To create more than three team maps, or create private mind maps, upgrading to a paid plan is required.
What existing MindMeister users need to do
- Decide as a team which 3 mind maps in the Team maps area you want to keep access to.
- You can then move additional mind maps to Trash, or consider upgrading to a paid plan to create unlimited team and private mind maps.
Important to know
- On Feb 24, 2025, only the 3 most recently created team mind maps will be accessible.
- To access older mind maps after Feb 24, 2025, you’ll need to delete one of your 3 most recent team maps or upgrade to a paid plan.
Private Mind Map vs Team Mind Map
There are two types of mind maps in MindMeister: Private Mind Maps and Team Mind Maps.
- Private mind maps are invite-only. Only users who have received an invitation can view a private mind map.
- Team mind maps are immediately visible to your entire team. Your teammates will not need an invitation to access your mind map.
3 Mind Map Limit per Team
Users on the Basic plan are limited to a maximum of 3 team mind maps per team. Previously, all users on the Basic plan had access to 3 mind maps per user.
If you work alone
- All private mind maps are automatically migrated to the Team maps area on Feb 24, 2025.
- Navigate to the area Team maps to access your mind maps.
If you work in a team
- Private mind maps created by you or one of your team members in the My maps area are greyed-out.
- Greyed-out private mind maps in the My Maps area are no longer accessible unless the Content Manager moves them to the Team maps area, where they will become accessible again.
- Move private mind maps to the Team maps area to regain access.
If you’d like to create unlimited team maps, as well as create private maps in the My maps area, you can upgrade to a paid plan.
Team Mind Maps Are the New Default
Private mind maps are no longer available on the Basic plan. If you need to create a new private mind map, upgrading to a paid plan is required.
If you need to access an existing, greyed out private mind map: Convert it into a team mind map to be able to access it again.
Accessibility of the Most Recent Team Mind Maps
If you have more than 3 mind maps in your account, only the 3 most recently created team mind maps are accessible.
In addition, you have access to mind maps created by people outside your team that have been shared with you. Mind maps shared with you by users outside your team will not contribute anymore to the 3 mind map limit.
Previously, you had access to the 3 oldest mind maps – this has now been changed.
Why are some mind maps in "My maps" still accessible?
If you have any accessible mind maps in the "My Maps" area (not greyed out), these mind maps were created by someone outside your team and shared with you.
Mind maps shared with you by users outside your team do not count toward the 3 mind map limit.
Help, all my mind maps in “My maps” are greyed out and are not accessible.
If you are on the Basic plan and part of a team, all private mind maps owned by your team in the "My Maps" area will be greyed out and inaccessible.
To regain access, convert them to team mind maps. Once converted, the mind maps will be accessible and visible to your team.
Can I avoid the changes by leaving my team?
No, this is not possible if you want to keep your mind maps.
While you can leave your team at any time, any mind maps you created will remain with the team and will not be transferred to your new account if you leave the team.
